What will it take to transform our disposable economy into an economy where waste is eliminated, resources circulated and nature is regenerated? The answer lies in the Circular Economy, the main theme of the

REUSE AFTERMARKET Campaign, launched by Jornal das Oficinas in 2022

Circular Economy

There is a world of opportunity to rethink the way we do things. We can redesign the way our economy works, designing products that can be produced to be used again, feeding the system with renewable energy. Preventing the creation of waste is the only realistic strategy. A circular economy challenges us to consider waste and pollution as design flaws.

Circular Economy is a new way of thinking about our future and how we relate to the planet. The final destination of a material is no longer a matter of waste management, but part of the product and system design process. In this way, we can eliminate the very concept of waste: each material is used in cyclical flows, which enables its trajectory from product to product, preserving and transmitting its value. It is a strategic concept based on the reduction, reuse, recovery and recycling of materials and energy. Replacing the end-of-life concept of the linear economy with new circular flows of reuse, restoration and renovation, in an integrated process.

The most important factor for the economic benefits of the circular economy is change and better understanding of the demand side. The way companies deal with their customers and the role they play throughout their lives leads to less use of raw materials, less waste production and changes in production.

The aftermarket in general and the workshops in particular have a fundamental role in this transformation process, both in the use of more sustainable materials and in the positive message they can convey to their customers, encouraging them to be more conscientious in choosing the components that install in their vehicles.

This gradual but irreversible transition towards a sustainable economic system is an indispensable element of the new management strategy of aftermarket companies that want to be at the forefront of circularity but also the dematerialization of the economy, making the sector less dependent on materials primary raw materials.

The transition to the circular economy will be systemic, profound and transformative for the entire aftermarket sector, requiring alignment and cooperation from all stakeholders at all levels – manufacturers, distributors, retailers, bodyshops and the end consumer.

We therefore invite companies to participate in this Campaign, with practical examples of measures and circularity solutions already implemented, thus contributing to the Circular Economy becoming a reality in our sector.

Through the publication of articles and video interviews on the best practices in reuse, waste reduction and recycling, we will reveal throughout 2022 the most important things that are being done in this field.
